Note: Due to the collaborative and workshop-based nature of the job, this role is not suitable for home or remote working.

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and highly motivated Electronics (Hardware) Engineer to join our dynamic team at Comar Systems Ltd. This role requires a strong understanding of both digital and analogue electronic hardware, including communications interfaces and interface-level software/firmware components for peripheral control and local data processing. A passion for developing innovative navigation products for the maritime industry is essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and development of digital and analogue electronic circuitry for Marine Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) and other Marine Navigation areas.
  • Engage in schematic capture, PCB layout (including prototyping and DFM engineering), implementation of microcontroller firmware for hardware testing, and final product operations.
  • Perform validation and verification testing of electronic circuitry, firmware, and products, including electrical performance, EMC, functional performance, and communications protocols compliance. Assist in thermal, mechanical shock, and vibration testing.
  • Write and update design review, validation, and test reports.
  • Assist in the development of device, hardware, and software specifications.
  • Maintain design change and version control records.
  • Provide technical support to the production team and assist in customer-facing technical support.
  • Contribute to the creation and update of a technical knowledge base.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Proven experience in electronics hardware engineering with a focus on both analogue and digital circuitry, including high-speed data routing (differential pairs, bus-length matching).
  • Experience with embedded microprocessor systems.
  • Proficiency with various peripheral/communication interfaces such as CAN Bus, UART (RS232), SPI/XSPI, I2C, ADC, DAC, USB, and Ethernet.
  • Understanding of EMC and performance standard compliance, including schematic/PCB design practices to facilitate compliance.
  • Knowledge of maritime/automotive communication protocols such as NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000, J1939, TCP, and UDP is highly advantageous.
  • Proficiency in programming embedded firmware for hardware control, primarily in C, with working knowledge of C++, Python, and assembly languages.
  • Ability to use IT development tools and software such as Altium Designer, Keil, Visual Studio, Microsoft Office/365.
  • Understanding of Agile/Scrum and Waterfall methodologies.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Education

  • GCSE/O-Level in English and Maths.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.

Experience

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in the maritime or navigation product industry.
  • Additional Skills/Requirements:
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
    • Ability to manage time efficiently and meet project deadlines.
    • A keen interest in keeping up-to-date with the latest technological developments.
    • A clean UK driving licence is an advantage.
    • Willingness to travel (UK and worldwide) to attend trade shows and customer meetings.
